Vine Power at Ayios Amvrosios

It was in 1986 that the Ioannas Panayiotou family moved from Nicosia to take up residence in the sleepy village of Ayios Amvrosios, helping to boost the now fast diminishing population of around three hundred souls. They lived surrounded by acres of vineyards, all of which had sustained many generations before them, the big decision was made to go entirely ecological, work then began on preparing the soil, followed by the construction of a winery. By 1988 the Agravani label was created, followed by a Cabernet Sauvignon, then Oenathi, joined the line up. Keen to experiment and develop with diverse grapes the first Agrambeli bottle was produced, almost at the same time as baby Salome came into the world, and so was born another wine to add to the list, this time one which bears her daughters name. One of the rather distinctive features of the wine bottles produced by the winery, is the truly tasteful labels that adorn the bottles, these help give a unique sense of occasion to the wine.

Valentinos Iosif the theatrical designer was the man responsible for the labels, and through his memorable designs, the bottles once purchased are rarely forgotten. Key to the winery’s success is the philosophy that although the wine is ecologically produced, they want people to buy it because they enjoy the flavour, this is critical, and in fact, a good few of my acquaintances who have enjoyed a glass or two over dinner, have been unaware of the wines natural origins, they just comment on who much they like it, surely that in itself is how it should be, and more power to their elbow. Lets hope there will now be encouragement for bringing on board more potential ‘Green’ manufacturers, then the public will come round to the fact that you do not have to forsake flavour, or quality, just because you go Green, in fact it’s the very opposite.
